First, I just want to thank everyone who has helped to spread the word about Lori's story. The response has been amazing. The hits on the website are coming from all over the place and I know it's because all of you are sending the links onto your friends and contacts. From the bottom of my heart, THANK YOU.
To update you all on Lori: Lori has been in ICU for two weeks now. She was intubated about 10 days ago because her breathing had simply gotten to a point where her body was struggling and it was affecting her blood pressure/heart rate etc. Obviously, we all prayed that it wouldn't get to this point, but we remain hopeful that somehow, some way she can beat this thing.
She has been incredibly moved by the show of financial support from friends and strangers. Two weeks ago, I mailed a cashiers' check to her mortgage company which saved her house--momentarily -from foreclosure.
It is because of the kindness of strangers, people who believed that each of us has the capacity to make change. Whether the donation was $1.80 or $500, together, we were able to give Lori the peace of mind of knowing her mother and her son will have a place to be while she continues to fight this battle. We've raised enough money that the house will remain safe for at least a few more months. What we've done is buy them time. Time to heal and time for doctors to assess their next move.

About Lori...
Lori, a gifted freelance writer who has penned more than 3,000 articles for local, regional and national publications, mysteriously lost the ability to move her feet in September 2007. The paralysis later spread to her legs and arms. She eventually moved to a wheelchair and had only limited use of her hands for typing. Her inability to use her hands meant she was no longer able to continue her work as a freelance writer, which had been her sole means of supporting her and her seven-year old son, Jackson. Her mom, Shannon, moved up from Florida in February to care for both of them. Lori is now confined to a hospital bed and is dependent upon a Bi-Pap breathing machine. Doctors confirmed a diagnosis of Lyme Disease in April, but have since named ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease) as a prime suspect.

After reading Lori's article "Clean" in the Traverse Magazine (which, actually, should have been delivered to my neighbor, but somehow found its way to my house instead) I could totally relate to her story about her mother. Somehow mothers manage to move slowly, silently, offering advice, cleaning, straightening, cooking and doing. Then quietly leave. It is at that time, after, that you realize the effects of their work. Somehow mothers leave our place a little better and a little brighter than how they found it. You realize how a simple gesture makes a big difference. I am thankful for my mother as well as Lori I’m sure is thankful for hers.
